Abstract

A two-year Writing Centre pilot in the School of History, Classics, and Archaeology (HCA). This pilot programme will provide two years of experience and evaluation data that will enable HCA to strategically and efficiently scale-up the Writing Centre into a permanent feature of the school, beginning in AY 2021-22.

In the Writing Centre undergraduate students will work one-on-one with a trained postgraduate writing tutor. These tutorials can take place at any stage of the writing process; whether students just want to talk through ideas for getting an essay started, whether they want to go over their outline, or even if they simply want an extra set of eyes to read over their final draft. The point is to provide students with a dedicated space to focus on writing and to do so with someone who has no stake in their final mark.

The Writing Centre has five core goals: to help students become better writers; to provide a skills-building tool for active learning and growth; to improve student involvement and engagement; to address diversity and equality, as not all student enter university with the same pedagogical and educational background; and to provide an added resource for honours students, when their writing most directly influences their degree. Because the Writing Centre will be staffed by postgraduate students—who will receive training and close mentoring—this innovative project will benefit both teaching and learning. As such, it will serve the pedagogical and job-training needs of undergraduates and postgraduates alike.
