Tagging

EdWeb supports tagging for abbreviations, languages using European scripts and citations.

Proper tagging is necessary to conform to disability laws and create a more user-friendly experience. More information about when and why to use tagging is available on the support wiki.

Abbreviations

Though it is best to avoid the use of abbreviations and acronyms where possible, all abbreviations and acronyms must be tagged, in at least the first instance of their use of a page. For example, UCAS is a UK based organisation.

Use of Plain English

Using the principles of Plain English, you may well be able to avoid shortened terms and create a sentence that is easier for users to understand.

Our video on Plain English, part of the Effective Digital Content training, explains the importance of avoiding jargon and waffle when creating digital content.

Language

You will sometimes need to write content in a foreign language, so that screenreaders can pronounce this properly. This includes names of people and organisations, like José Muñoz or Comhairle nan Leabhraichean. Tagging these is important for visitors using screenreaders, but there's no visual information to differentiate this content.

Character accents are supported, through pasting your text, although currently, only languages using European alphabets are available.

If you have a need for Chinese characters, Cyrillic scripts etc on your site, please get in touch to discuss this with us.

Citations

The University website often needs to refer to publications, often written by our own academics. The citation tag allows these references to be correctly marked up. You can choose what information to add to your citation, for example, the author or publisher.

For example, a great resource for writing and maintaining a website is Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think.

Tagging within other elements

Although all formatting options can be used in conjunction with each other (for example, a citation including an abbreviation), not all elements support formatting and tagging options. Where formatting is not available, you should avoid using content that needs to be tagged.
