FAQs
Frequently asked questions to help students use Resource Lists.
Not all courses use Resource Lists yet. You can still browse other lists on the Resource Lists homepage and you might consider asking your lecturer to use Resource Lists. They can contact the Library for more information.
Check that you have enabled third party cookies in your browser and/or try using a different browser. If this doesn't solve the issue contact EdHelp.
While you wait for the issue to be resolved, you can access your Resource List from the service homepage: http://resourcelists.ed.ac.uk
Use the information on the Library’s accessing e-resources webpage for answers to common e-resource issues.
If there’s no obvious technical reason, there may be restrictions on how many people can access the e-book at any one time.
While the Library prefers to buy e-books that can be used by unlimited concurrent users, we sometimes have no choice but to buy e-books with restricted user licences which may only allow one person or a small number of people to access them at the same time.
You can check the e-book licence information on your Resource List. Click on the citation and you’ll see the full citation view, any restrictions will be shown under the ‘View online’ link. Here you should see any information on the number of concurrent users or available copies.
Some e-books can be ‘borrowed’ for 24 hours. Keep checking for access. If you’re persistently unable to access the e-book you need because there are restrictions to the licence, contact Library.Learning@ed.ac.uk
If you are faced with a login screen before you access an e-book, select ‘login via Shibboleth and select ‘University of Edinburgh’ from the drop down menu. If, at any time, you clear your cache, you may need to login this way again.
You need to be logged in to access the citations, either by logging into DiscoverEd or Leganto by clicking on the icon in the top right corner and logging in with your University login. If this does not resolve the issue, please contact EdHelp.
If the links to any of the items on your list aren't working, please contact EdHelp library.learning@ed.ac.uk. While you wait for a reply, find the book, e-book or journal article on DiscoverED and see if you can access it from there.
You can use the Library's Interlibrary Loans (ILL) Service and Request a Book (RaB) Service to request ‘Further reading’.
Make sure you are logged in with your University login by clicking on the person icon in the top right corner. You can try to find your course's reading list from the Resource Lists homepage. Make sure 'Active' and 'Published' are selected. If you are still not able to access the list, try a new browser. If the problem persists, contact the EdHelp.
This is a known issue that occurs with Google Chrome browser. Clearing your browser data (cache, cookies, history) will resolve the problem. You should also be able to access your Resource List using other browsers. We are working with our supplier to resolve this issue.
There are still a very small number of e-resources that are limited to on-campus use only. Off-campus access to these resources is only available through the Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN allows you to connect to the University network from off-campus.
If you want to export your Resource List:
- Go to the List’s Main Menu (the three dots on the top right)
- Select ‘Export’
- Select your preferred format from the list available
- Select the information you want to include in the export (if you select to export to Word, you can also select your preferred citation style)
- Click ‘Export’
- Your exported file will be available to open.
The Library introduced a Resource Lists Retention Policy in September 2022. Between 10 -12 January 2023 Resource Lists for academic years 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 were archived.
Resource Lists for the current academic year plus the two previous academic years are available to Course Organisers and students. A few older lists which are in use are still available.
Archived lists are not deleted. Students can contact the Library and ask for a copy of an archived list.
If you require access to an older version of your Resource List, please email Library.Learning@ed.ac.uk with the relevant course name, course code (if known) and year required.
The Library will send you a PDF of the list and a Word document. Both documents will include citation details and links to resources.
