Springer Subscription Renewal
UK universities agree 3 year open access publishing deal with Springer Nature for 2023-25
The University of Edinburgh's old agreement with Springer, which had been running since 2015, expired on 31 December 2022 . It was the first UK transitional agreement and combined open access publishing in 1900 Springer journals and access to the content of 2,500 Springer journals, but crucially not the prestigious Nature research and Palgrave journals. The new agreement which has just been announced significantly expands the range of journals included in the Read & Publish deal.
Key points of the new Springer Nature Read & Publish agreement
- Unlimited open access publishing for Springer and Palgrave hybrid journals for UOE corresponding authors.
- Open access publishing in Nature and the Nature research journals is subject to a cap, which modelling shows should be sufficient.
Current status
The announcement of the new agreement was announced on 3rd May 2023. The Jisc press release can be found online here:
It will take a while for the journals from Nature and Palgrave to be added to the open access pipeline. Meanwhile, we recommend corresponding authors should publish as normal whilst the OA processes are put in place for these new titles. We have not updated the local list of Read & Publish journals with Springer Nature titles but this will be carried out once we have confirmation of the correct workflows.
Open Access fees for fully OA titles - e.g. BioMed Central, Springer Open and npj Series - are not included
Article processing charges for fully open access journals like Nature Communications or the Nature Partner Journals (npj Series) are NOT included in the agreement for The University of Edinburgh. The Library can pay the open access fees for these journals for UKRI, Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and British Heart Foundation grant award holders only. If you are funded by one of these organisations and wish to receive funding for publishing in the fully OA journals please submit an application online here:
