University of Edinburgh graduates are entitled to join the library as an external borrower for free.*
|External borrower||Free. Membership lasts for 3 years.|
*Graduates of the University wishing to join the library as alumni borrowers must clear any outstanding library fines and fees they accrued whilst studying at the University. Alumni borrowing membership of the library is not open to alumni who are currently students at the University as they are already library members.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring the appropriate ID as outlined below. You will be unable to register unless you have all the requested documentation.

What does my card entitle me to?

Registration can take place at any Card Helpdesk but can only take place during Helpdesk staffed hours. You may fill in the application form online before visiting the library.
Please note that registration ceases 20 minutes prior to the Helpdesk closing.
Your library card can be used in the Main Library and all site libraries. Access to departmental or class libraries is not available.
WiFi access for graduates
All our Libraries are part of the University of Edinburgh's WiFi network. Alumni may register for use of WiFi and are entitled to use the service in any of our Libraries.
Replacement cards (lost, stolen or expired)
If your external borrower's card is lost, stolen or damaged you can get it replaced at a card helpdesk for a £10 fee.
To renew your membership card, please bring proof of address in the last 3 months and photo ID. If you have difficulty coming in person, we can send out a renewed card to the existing address on record as means of proof that you are still resident at this address. Please contact the Main Library Helpdesk on 0131 650 3409 and pay membership fees by credit or debit card. An updated Library card will then be sent out to your home address.
If you attend in person, without proof of address, we can at our discretion send a renewed card to the address on our records but wouldn't be able to provide you with a card at that time.
Friends of Edinburgh University Library
You are very welcome to become a life member of the Friends of Edinburgh University Library, which is a separate charitable organisation, on payment of the current fee.
