Library services - NHS Lothian

NHS Lothian staff are entitled to the following library services.

Books

You have access to print book collections across the University of Edinburgh. Relevant subjects include Nursing, Medicine, Public health, Leadership, Business, Personal and professional development.

You can borrow up to 60 books at any time. To see what books and print materials are available search the University of Edinburgh online catalogue at DiscoverEd.

If the book you need is held in the university but at another site then it can be ordered for collection at RIL or WGHL, or you can visit the holding library to collect it yourself. A full list of all the sites and their opening hours is available on the  University web pages.  If we do not have the book then let us know and we can arrange an interlibrary loan.

Please note that books can be recalled if requested by another user and fines will charged for the late return of items.

Journals

You have access to the print collections of the journals and you can borrow the whole issue of a journal (unless it is the most current. The university can provide a copy of an article it has in its collection (within copyright limitations) through the interlibrary loan service.

For articles not available through the university please go to the Knowledge Network.

E-resources

There is online access to limited electronic resources. Due to licensing agreements these resources are only available at the visitor PCs situated in the Main library, Western General Hospital Library, and Royal Infirmary Hospital Library.

Most online resources for NHS staff are available from the Knowledge Network (http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk).

University of Edinburgh library staff can provide training on how to use resources either from the Knowledge Network or University resources.

PCs, Copying, Printing and Scanning Photocopying, printing and scanning facilities are available in all libraries for a small charge, see https://www.ed.ac.uk/information-services/computing/desktop-personal/printing/everyoneprint for details. There are 19 NHS networked PCs at the Royal Infirmary Library and 3 at the Western General Hospital Library.
Study facilities There are study facilities at all of the library sites.
Help with literature searching

As well as undertaking searches on behalf of NHS staff the University of Edinburgh library staff can provide help on a range of literature search skills including: Developing search strategies, systematic review support and using referencing software. For help and advice please contact one of the Academic Support Librarians.

MakerSpace @ uCreate Studio This is the University of Edinburgh's Community Makerspace. They offer access to 3D printers, virtual reality technology, 3D scanning plus other similar digital manufacture and electronics equipment. Full details are available from the Makerspace website.
