SCONUL Access

Edinburgh University Library is a member of the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) Access scheme. Once registered with the scheme University of Edinburgh staff and students can get free membership of other SCONUL Access libraries, in line with their local admissions policies.

How do I register with SCONUL Access?

You must complete a SCONUL Access application form online from the SCONUL Access website.

If the application is approved then library staff will provide you with a SCONUL Access approval e-mail. If you have any blocks on your library record e.g. fines of over £20, then these blocks will have to be cleared before your application can be approved.

Registration is for a maximum of 3 years, or the end of your contract or course, if this is sooner.

Registering with other libraries using your SCONUL Access e-mail

  • Check that the Library that you wish to visit is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme and accepts your user type, as not all libraries will.
  • Check the websites of individual participating libraries for their opening hours and other local conditions (e.g. new tickets may only be issued during office hours or not on the day of first visit; you may need to supply a passport sized photograph) before your first visit. If you will need specialist help during your visit, you must contact the libraries in advance.
  • Take a copy of your approval email AND your staff ID or student matriculation card along with you. You will be issued with a library card, which will normally have the same expiry date as your SCONUL Access approval e-mail.
  • Abide by the rules of the library you wish to use. You will be responsible for any fines or replacement costs incurred.
