5. Finding books in the Library Hall

The lending and reference books are classified using subject classification systems, so that books on a similar topic can sit together.

New College Library uses two classification systems. Current Library stock from 2002 onwards is catalogued using the Library of Congress system. Nearly all of the books in the Library Hall use this classification system.

Most books on Religion are shelfmarked BL-BX in this system. Notice that the text on the spine labels is printed in blue. Library of Congress shelfmarks also have fewer spaces and use lower case letters.

Older books are classified using the Union Theological Seminary Scheme and most of these books can be found in Stack 1
