Comprising 2,429 documents, this set on one of Washington’s most important Latin American relationships describes the development of U.S. policy as it attempts to deal with the tragedy experienced in Argentina during the critical, formative period of the late 1970’s, which featured a political collapse verging on civil war; a military coup; and massive illegal detentions, torture, and kidnappings. The documents show U.S. officials from two very different presidential administrations grappling with human rights violations in the context of the Cold War on a scale never heard of in the Western Hemisphere, underscored by the dramatic disappearance of tens of thousands of people at the hands of the security forces.

Caribbean Newspapers, 1718-1876, a comprehensive primary resource from the American Antiquarian Society, is the largest online collection of 18th- and 19th-century newspapers published in the region. It is a valuable resource for studying the development of Western society and international relations within this important group of islands.  This unique resource is essential for researching colonial history, the Atlantic slave trade, international commerce, New World slavery and U.S. relations with the region, as far back as the early 18th century. 

Created in cooperation with the American Antiquarian Society—one of the world's largest and most important newspaper repositories—this collection will provide students and scholars with easy access to more than 150 years of Caribbean and Atlantic history, cultures and daily life. Featuring more than 140 newspapers from 22 islands, this resource will chronicle the region’s evolution across two centuries through eyewitness reporting, editorials, legislative information, letters, poetry, advertisements, obituaries and other news items.

To summarise, it is:

• The largest collection of fully searchable 18th- and 19th-century Caribbean newspapers online demonstrating the evolution of the region across two centuries, chronicled within more than 140 titles from 22 islands
• Essential for research on colonial history, the Atlantic slave trade, international commerce, New World slavery and related topics.

The Casalini full text platform (Torrossa) provides access to several thousand scholarly books and primary literary works from Italian and Spanish academic publishers since 2000 for University of Edinburgh users. As of July 2022, the collection consists of 2,463 Italian e-books (including a digital library called  Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli of 1,171 titles of Italian literary works – added in July 2022) and about 14,500 Italian book chapters and journal articles,  772  Spanish e-books and 2,450 Spanish book chapters and journal articles, as well as a small number of e-books, chapters and articles in English, French, Portuguese, German and Catalan. The database is full text searchable. Bibliographic records of the individual e-books are findable in DiscoverEd, but titles of book chapters and journal articles from this database are not yet indexed in DiscoverEd.

This set of documents focuses on United States policy toward El Salvador and events in El Salvador from the Carter administration's formulation of a new Central American policy in January 1977 through the Salvadoran presidential elections of May 1984 that brought José Napoleón Duarte to power. Major events include: the military coup of October 1979; the agrarian reform efforts launched in 1980 and 1981; significant labour and peasant protests followed by a growing number of leftist guerrilla actions; and a series of political slayings widely attributed to government affiliated forces including those of Archbishop Oscar Romero, leaders of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (FDR), four American churchwomen, and three land reform proponents.

This second set of declassified U.S. records concerning El Salvador focuses on a series of human rights cases that became a subject of special attention by the United Nations Truth Commission. With the 1993 release of the commission's ground-breaking investigation, members of Congress appealed to President Clinton to declassify those records for public inspection. Many of those documents are included in this compilation.  Altogether, the collection, spanning  four presidencies, constitutes an extraordinarily rich account of a controversial and still highly relevant U.S. foreign policy issue.

This resource gives rich insight into the efforts of the Executive Branch of U.S. government to reach out to the burgeoning Latino population during the last 2 years of the Carter Administration. Major topics covered in this collection include inflation, bilingual education, police brutality, political unrest in Latin America, Haitian refugees, and immigration (legal and otherwise), Puerto Rican self-determination, and the U.S. Navy’s use of Vieques Island. Latino Civil Rights during the Carter Administration also documents some of the most important Latino organizations of the time, including LULAC, TELACU, La Raza, the Puerto Rican Legal Defence and Education Fund, the Mexican American Legal Defence and Education Fund, and the American G.I. Forum.

Latinx Thought and Culture: The NPR Archive, 1979-1990 showcases two radio programs: the weekly Spanish-language Enfoque Nacional (1979-1988) and the Daily English-language Latin File (1988-1990), available for the first time in a searchable database as digitized audio with transcripts. They focus on Latinx issues related to politics, sociology, human rights, the arts and more with interviews of key figures and news reporting by a new generation of Latino/a journalists at the time

This digital research source from Adam Matthew provides you with access to a huge range of primary sources covering social, cultural, political, scientific and religious perspectives, from the 15th to early 18th centuries. The breadth of sources provided within this collection is extensive, from sources concerning the Black Death to the Restoration of the English monarchy and the Glorious Revolution. PQOL contains 3 million literature citations from thousands of journals, monographs, dissertations, and more than 500,000 primary works – including rare and obscure texts, multiple versions, and non-traditional sources like comics, theatre performances, and author readings. Enhanced by interpretive sources such as book reviews and criticism sourced from wider, interdisciplinary publications in the fields such as humanities and history, it provides diverse, global perspectives with sources from all over the world – Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America - the majority of which are in full-text. PQOL differs from LION also in its discipline-specific user experience, hand-keyed primary texts, the ABELL index, and a collection of author and literary movement pages, with more discipline user experience enhancements to come in the future as the product grows. PQOL is also a community-based  literary studies tool for scholars who must engage with an exhaustive and diverse set of scholarly resources around a given literary topic for research, teaching and learning. The database can be browed by literary period, literary movement, author name or literature collections.
