Visiting and Opening Hours

Information about access to the School of Scottish Studies Archives & Library

First register with the Library

If you are not a staff member or student of the University, you will need to register as a reference user. You may already have a reference user’s card and if so, please bring it with you when you visit us at The School of Scottish Studies Archives and Library.

If you are not a reference user, you can start the registration process online at the Main Library website.

Once you have entered in a few details, you will be prompted which ID you need to bring when you come to collect your card. You collect your card from the help desk inside the main door of the library.  When you arrive at The School of Scottish Studies Archives we will ask you to fill in our registration form and staff will give you an introduction to using the archive search and the finding aids. 

Opening Times & Location

The School of Scottish Studies Archives and Library is located at 29 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LD.

The Search Room and library are open 10:00-16:00, Tuesday to Friday. 

Note that manuscript archives are produced at 10:30 and 14:30. Requests for material can be made ahead of your visit.

No appointment is necessary, but if you wish to discuss your requirements in advance, email or telephone (0131) 650 3060


Festive Closure

The School of Scottish Studies Archives and Library will close at 16:00 on Friday, 20 December 2019.

We open in the New Year at 10:00 on Tuesday, 7 January 2020.
