COVID-19 Closure Information
Following government advice, face-to-face services at the School of Scottish Studies Archives & Library remains closed.
As part of the Scottish Government’s planned route map out of lockdown, it is expected that Edinburgh will move to restriction Level 3 on Monday 26 April. From this date services are expected to re-open with the exception of The School of Scottish Studies Archive and Library. Face to Face Services in 29 George Square will remain closed until further notice.
- We are still monitoring our email enquiries (email@example.com) and, where possible, will direct users to relevant online resources.
- From 26 April we may be able to arrange consulation of certain SSSA special collections at the Centre for Research Collections. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org in the first instance to discuss this.

First register with the Library
If you are not a staff member or student of the University, you will need to register as a reference user. You may already have a reference user’s card and if so, please bring it with you when you visit us at The School of Scottish Studies Archives and Library.
If you are not a reference user, you can start the registration process online at the Main Library website.
Once you have entered in a few details, you will be prompted which ID you need to bring when you come to collect your card. You collect your card from the help desk inside the main door of the library. When you arrive at The School of Scottish Studies Archives we will ask you to fill in our registration form and staff will give you an introduction to using the archive search and the finding aids.
Opening Times & Location
The School of Scottish Studies Archives and Library is located at 29 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LD.
The Search Room and library are open 10:00-16:00, Tuesday to Friday.
Note that manuscript archives are produced at 10:30 and 14:30. Requests for material can be made ahead of your visit.
