Reader Registration

Guidance about how to register to access the University of Edinburgh Main Library and CRC.

To visit the CRC, you will need access to the University of Edinburgh library. Please read the guidance below for registration information if you are not a staff or student of the university.

First register with the Library

If you do not have a staff/student card or library membership card for the University of Edinburgh, you will need to register for a Reference Reader card when you arrive at the library. This is a free membership card valid for one year that provides access to the Main Library building.

You will need to bring the following items on your first visit (please note, photocopies are not accepted):

  • Photographic ID
  • Proof of Address (valid from within the last 3 months, e.g. a utility bill or bank statement)

The University of Edinburgh participates in the SCONUL programme with other universities in the UK and Ireland. If you wish to access the library as a SCONUL user, please bring the following items:

  • Staff/Student Card for your Institution
  • A printed copy of the email sent to you by SCONUL, confirming that you have registered for access to the University of Edinburgh Libraries
