Information Literacy and Library Skills Sessions

Bookable sessions to boost skills in using the library, finding academic literature, referencing and more. University staff can request bespoke teaching as part of Welcome and course programmes.

Welcome & Inductions

Academic Support Librarians take part in Welcome Week activities at the start of each semester to help new students learn about how the library can support them during their time at Edinburgh. 

In the past sessions have included: 

  • How to use the library online 

  • How to find academic literature online 

  • How to get help with accessing library resources if you need it.

Introduction to the Library for University Staff

University of Edinburgh staff are invited to sign up (via People & Money) for an introductory session on using the Library. Staff can also join an Academic Support Librarian for a tour of one of the University's libraries and learn more about key Library services:

Library Bitesize 

Library Bitesize sessions are presented by Academic Support Librarians in conjunction with the Digital Skills and Training team and are suitable for staff and students at all levels of study. They are short session of 30 minutes which introduce a range of topics including: 

  • How to use the Library 
  • How to reference and avoid plagiarism 
  • Finding theses 
  • Fake news vs real news: discovering news sources 
  • Ten top tips for finding academic literature 
  • Using Google Scholar for finding academic literature 
  • Starting using ebooks, and Studying with ebooks

Research Skills with the Institute for Academic Development 

The Library Academic Support team support the academic skills training on offer from the Institute for Academic Development (IAD). These sessions are usually longer (50 minutes), primarily designed to support postgraduate students and are currently held online. Bookable sessions are available on the following topics:  

  • Getting started with the Library 
  • Finding Academic Literature for your Dissertation 
  • Citing sources and creating bibliographies with Endnote or Zotero
  • Searching Research Literature

Library induction & information skills for timetabling into academic programmes

Academic Support Librarians also provide bespoke induction and information skills teaching as part of timetabled academic programmes. Content can be aligned to course learning outcomes and course materials can be used to support the training.
