We support academic teams to design, develop and deliver a range of online courses, from informal courses, to more extensive certificates and programmes.
MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)
MOOCs are freely accessible, open licensed (i.e. Creative Commons) short, informal courses. Generally, they run over three to six weeks, with around one to three study hours per week, and feature a range of high-quality materials and activities such as video, podcasts, animations and interactive activities.
MOOCs can be instructor-led, running a number of times per year, or self-paced, to allow learners to enrol throughout the year. They do not have formal University credits assigned to them, but learners can opt to upgrade for a small fee to receive a certificate of completion. We deliver our MOOCs on three partner platforms. A Professional Certificate is a short programme of courses designed to build and enhance critical professional skills needed to succeed in today's job market. They help learners showcase their skills to employers in a specific field.
We launched the University’s first Professional Certificate in August 2020 in Digital Marketing Fundamentals.
Open Education Resources: Open to the world
The Online Course Production Service works closely with the Open Education Resource (OER) Service to source, create and publish all course materials under open licence. To ensure that our resources are open, sustainable and accessible, we share the videos created for each course through our Open Media Bank, where over 600 videos can be downloaded under open licence for reuse by all.
