Introduction

Questionmark Perception is a specialised system which can create assessments for delivery over the web. This page describes the Perception model of assessment construction and delivery.

What is QMP designed for?

Questionmark Perception(QMP) is a tool for creating and delivering assessments online. It offers a greater range of question types (21) than the assessment tools which are built into the Virtual Learning Environments Learn or Moodle. It can be used formatively to make tests or quizzes or used for summative exams. It can also be used for surveys. Its strengths are in the range of reporting options that are available within it and the multi-layered feedback that can be delivered to students.

Using Questionmark Perception consists two main activities: authoring questions and creating assessments. Questions are separate from assessments and may be used in multiple assessments.

Authoring questions

There are 21 question types available ranging from simple multiple choice questions to more complex drag and drop questions. Feedback can be added to the question when authoring to deliver a formative learning activity to participants. Questions can be authored on any platform via a web browser.

Creating assessments

Once your questions have been authored, you then create an assessment. An assessment controls the presentation - which questions are chosen, how they are sorted and which template, instructions, feedback and time limits are used.

Scheduling assessments

Once an assessment has been created it should be passed to Information Services to be scheduled for use. A schedule controls when a given assessment is available online, and which students can take it. An assessment can be scheduled for as long or short a period as required and students can be given any number of attempts to complete it.

Delivering assessments

Once the assessment is made available, students follow a URL to the exam in a web browser, and enter their University username and password. They are then presented with the assessment for completion and submission within the specified time period. Once the assessment has been submitted the marks are recorded and may also be displayed to the student if desired along with any feedback that has been authored into the question.

Marking assessments

After an assessment has been completed the marks are available on the system for authorised staff. The web-based Report Manager can analyse the marks and the questions in various ways, or the raw marks can be exported and made available for staff to process in tools such as Excel.
