Considerations before requesting Online Invigilation & Alternative Assessment Types

Things to Consider

Online Invigilation tools should only be used in exceptional circumstances. An academic led governance process has been created to ensure that the adoption of online invigilation is scrutinized due to numerous concerns including the ethical adoption of online invigilation and the impact on the student experience.

Academics are strongly advised to consider alternative assessment types has been developed to support academics review all other options.  When considering Online Invigilation please consider the following challenges:

  • user privacy concerns
  • costs (which will paid for by the school)
  • additional risks of technical failure (broadband drops, local hardware issues, power)
  • inequality
  • digital anxiety
  • issues around accessibility

Alternative Assessment Types

Before deciding whether or not you want to use online invigilation we advise exploring other forms of assessment. Exams are not always the best means to assess your students and it’s good to have assessments that test the actual learning and abilities you want your students to achieve.

The following links provides information and guidance on designing assessments that might work better than online invigilated exams. This includes consideration of the misconduct security of each format.

One thing to remember is that no format is risk-free!
