VPN Installation and Configuration

The following guide will lead you through installing and configuring the FortiClient VPN on your Apple device for connections from China.

As China is such a large country we have created two VPN connection points to help improve performance. Which one you should use will depend on where you are located within China but general advice is to connect to the one that is geographically closest:

Remote Gateway Region Area
47.112.118.73 Shenzhen China South
182.92.210.105 Beijing China North

We recommend that you create two connections in Forticlient VPN and then try both to see which gives the best performance.

  1. Open the Apple store on your Apple Device
  2. Search for FortiClient VPN
  3. Tap Get
  4. Once the installation is complete tap Open
  5. On the Privacy Policy highlights screen tap 'I accept'
  6. On the support information screen tap 'I accept'
  7. On the FortiClient VPN permissions screen, tap 'Allow'
  8. On the VPN screen tap 'Connections'
  9. Tap 'Add Configuration...'
  10. Enter  the details as follows:
    1. Name : VPN@Ed - SSL China South
    2. Host : 47.112.118.73
    3. Port : 8443
    4. User : <your uun>
  11. Leave all other details as defaults
  12. Tap Save

Now create a second VPN connection for China North by repeating steps 9 - 12 above but using the following values

  • Name: VPN@Ed - SSL China North
  • Host: 182.92.210.105
  • Port: 8443
  • User: <your uun>
  1. Under 'User VPN Gateway' the VPN@Ed- SSL entry should be listed with a tick next to it
  2. Tap "<VPN" to return to the main screen
  3. Tap the slider next to VPN
  4. Your username (uun) should already be filled in (no @ed.ac.uk required)
  5. Enter your VPN password (seperate from normal password) , tap on OK
  • On the Connection Request screen tap ok

You should now be connected to the University network

Once you are finished your work and want to disconnect:

  • Open the Forticlient VPN app
  • On the main screen, tap the slider next to VPN

You are now disconected from the university network
