Add a print queue - non-supported Mac

How to add a University print queue on a non-supported or personal Apple Mac.

Cloud print queues

NOTE: This method is not full-proof. It is an unsupported potential workaround for non-University Macs and may only work on macOS 10.13+. If you have any difficulties, please use EveryonePrint.

  1. Connect to the eduroam WiFi network
  2. Run the Cloud Printing package to add the Cloud-Mono and Cloud-Colour queues.
  3. At 'Hold for Authentication' (when printing), click the resume button and enter your University username and password.

Departmental (non-Cloud) print queues

  1. Visit http://localhost:631/admin on your personal Mac and click 'Add Printer' > 'Windows printer via spoolss' > 'Continue'.
  2. Enter the printer queue path, e.g. smb://hss-ps1.hss.ed.ac.uk/EDUC-118CH-BW

  3. Give the printer a name and click 'Continue'.

  4. For the 'Make', select 'Generic' and then press 'Continue'. 

  5. Choose the print driver (PCL: Mono, PostScript: Colour) and select 'Add Printer'.

  6. Under 'General', set 'Media size' to be 'A4', choose any preferences and press  'Select Default Options'.

  7. At 'Hold for Authentication' (when printing), click the resume button and enter your University username and password.
