Add a print queue - non-supported Linux
Adding University Cloud print queues on a non-supported or personal Linux machine.
Ensure your Linux computer is connected to the eduroam WiFi network or the University wired network and go through the following steps in order:
This guide assumes that you have root privileges and that CUPS is installed on your local workstation. Tested on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, other distributions may behave differently.
To release print jobs on University Cloud printers, they must be sent using your University username (UUN).
If your logged on user name does NOT match UUN then either:
- Modify your bash profile to set your printer username to your UUN:
Add export CUPS_USER='yourUUN' to ~/.profile for Bash.
Log out and back in to make this available to all programs.
In the Terminal, run the following commands to download and install the print driver:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/
sudo wget -O /usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/x2UNIV.ppd http://www.servicedelivery.is.ed.ac.uk/xerox/x2UNIV.ppd
sudo apt-get install smbclient
(NB Use the appropriate package manager command for your Linux distro to install smbclient. Advice on this is outside the scope of these instructions)
sudo systemctl stop cups
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart cups
Run the following commands to add, configure and enable Cloud-Colour:
lpadmin -p Cloud-Colour -v "smb://is-ps-cloud1.is.ed.ac.uk/Cloud-Colour" -L "Cloud-Colour" -D "Cloud-Colour on is-ps-cloud1" -P "/usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/x2UNIV.ppd"
lpadmin -p Cloud-Colour -o printer-is-shared=false -o auth-info-required=username,password -o duplex=DuplexNoTumble -o PageSize=A4 -o JCLBanner=False -o Option4=None -o Option8=False
lpadmin -p Cloud-Colour -E
Run the following commands to add, configure and enable Cloud-Mono:
lpadmin -p Cloud-Mono -v "smb://is-ps-cloud1.is.ed.ac.uk/Cloud-Mono" -L "Cloud-Mono " -D "Cloud-Mono on is-ps-cloud1" -P "/usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/x2UNIV.ppd"
lpadmin -p Cloud-Mono -o printer-is-shared=false -o auth-info-required=username,password -o duplex=DuplexNoTumble -o PageSize=A4 -o JCLBanner=False -o Option4=None -o Option8=False -o JCLColorCorrection=BlackWhite -o JCLTrueGrayGraphics=True -o JCLPrintQuality=Standard -o MediaType=Standard
lpadmin -p Cloud-Mono -E
Submit a print job from an application, select either Cloud-Mono or Cloud-Colour as the destination printer
When prompted to authenticate, enter your University Username in the form:
