Adding a print queue
How to add a print queue on University-supported and non-supported devices.
On University-supported computers
EdPrintPull (follow-me printing)
The queue EdPrintPull on edprint.is.ed.ac.uk should already be in place on University-supported Windows PCs, including open-access lab machines, which you can check under 'Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners'.
You can print to this queue and release your job on any EdPrintPull (follow-me) printer on campus.
Queue missing
Staff
If the queue is not there, or you need to re-add it, you can do so as follows:
- Click 'Start' > 'This PC' and navigate to the U:\ drive
- Open the 'EdPrint' folder and double-click the queue EdPrintPull on edprint.is.ed.ac.uk
Labs
If you are on a lab machine, please contact the IS Helpline to advise them of this issue.

School / departmental queues
- Click 'Start' > 'This PC' and navigate to the U:\ drive
- Select the abbreviation for your area, e.g. MVM, SASG etc
- Choose 'PRINTERS' and then your building and department
- Double-click the print queue you require
EdPrintPull (follow-me printing)
The queue EdPrintPull should already be in place on University-supported Apple Macs, including open-access lab machines, which you can check under Apple > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
You can print to this queue and release your job on any EdPrintPull (follow-me) printer on campus.

- Launch the Self Service app from your Applications folder.
- Choose 'Printers' from the list on the left.
- Scroll through to find 'EdPrintPull LPD' and choose 'Add Printer'.

Staff- Adding a school / departmental queue
- Launch the Self Service app from your Applications folder
- Choose 'Printers' from the list on the left
- Scroll through to find the building the printer you need is situated in and choose 'Add Printers'. It will add all print queues for that building
EdPrintPull (follow-me printing)
The queue EdPrintPull should automatically be in place on your supported Linux desktop.
You can print to this queue and release your job on any EdPrintPull (follow-me) printer on campus.
If the queue is not present, please speak to your local IT support team.

On personal (non-supported) devices
MobilityPrint - EdPrintPull (follow-me) printing
Quickly add a print queue to allow printing of any document type (does not support tray selection).
- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Visit https://edin.ac/mobilityprint-windows
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and run the 'Mobility Print Printers Setup' installer
- When asked, enter Your University Login username and password and press 'Next' and 'Finish'
- You should now find the EdPrintPull queue under 'Start' > 'Devices & Printers'

- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Click 'Start' and enter the appropriate print server path below for your area
- If asked, enter your username in the format ed\jbloggs and your password
- Scroll through and double-click the desired printer to add it to 'Start' > 'Devices and Printers'

MobilityPrint - EdPrintPull (follow-me) printing
Quickly add a print queue to allow printing of any document type (does not support tray selection).
- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Visit https://edin.ac/mobilityprint-mac
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download the 'Papercut Mobility Print Client' installer package
- Double-click the orange package icon and follow the steps to install it, entering your Mac's admin username and password when asked
- You should find the EdPrintPull queue is now added under System Preferences > Printers & Scanners
IMPORTANT: When you print for the first time, you maybe asked to authenticate. Enter Your University Login username and password.

'No mountable file systems' error on older Mac operating systems
On Mac operating systems earlier than macOS 10.12 (Sierra) you may receive the error 'no mountable file systems' when installing the package.
You should please upgrade your system to macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later via the Apple App Store.

- Open the Terminal app (from /Application/Utilities) and run the command cupsctl WebInterface=yes to enable access to the printing system
- Visit http://localhost:631/admin on your personal Mac and click 'Add Printer' > 'Windows printer via spoolss' > 'Continue'

Enter the printer queue path, e.g. smb://hss-ps1.hss.ed.ac.uk/EDUC-118CH-BW

Give the printer a name and click 'Continue'

For the 'Make', select 'Generic' and then press 'Continue'

Choose the print driver (PCL: Mono, PostScript: Colour) and select 'Add Printer'

Under 'General', set 'Media size' to be 'A4', choose any preferences and press 'Select Default Options'

At 'Hold for Authentication' (when printing), click the resume button and enter your University username and password
MobilityPrint - EdPrintPull (follow-me) printing
There is no installer package available for Linux. Please use the following instructions to add the EdPrintPull queue manually.
This example is based on Ubuntu 18.04, other distros should be similar but specific steps will vary.
NB Linux distros other than Ubuntu may need to use the system-config-printer utility to install the EdPrintPull-MP print queue. It should be installed from your distro's software package repository as required. Please refer to your specific distro's help for details on how to install software.
- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Download the edprint.ppd driver
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers
- Select Additional Printer Settings
- Click Add...
- Select Network Printer and Internet Printing Protocol(https)
- Enter the queue name: https://edprint.is.ed.ac.uk:9164/printers/EdPrintPull
- Wait for driver selection window, select provided PPD file
- Browse to the downloaded edprint.ppd file, select it and click open
- Click Forward
- Set printer name to "EdPrintPull-MP"
- Click Apply. If prompted to authenticate at this point, use your local login details for your pc.
- If this step fails, you may first need to add your local account as a member of the 'lpadmin' group on your pc E.G.

In a terminal enter: sudo usermod -a -G lpadmin <localaccountname>

- Click Cancel when prompted to print a test page
Set print queue defaults
- Right-click the EdPrintPull-MP printer and select Printer Properties
- Click Policies and untick Shared, click Apply
- Click Printer Options, set Colour Mode to Greyscale, untick Staple Unit.
- Click Apply. If prompted to authenticate at this point, use your local login details for your pc.
Authentication
When you print, an "EdPrintPull-MP" Requires Authentication pop-up should appear - click on the pop-up
The Active Jobs list window should appear, click Authenticate, enter your University Username and password

(Instructions are based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, so some things may well have changed)
Check your local log in name
Print jobs must be sent using your University username (UUN). If your logged on user name does NOT match UUN then either:

- Modify your bash profile to set your printer username to your UUN:
- Add export CUPS_USER='yourUUN' to ~/.profile for Bash.
- Log out and back in to make this available to all programs.
Install the printer driver and smbclient
In the Terminal, run the following commands to download and install the print driver: sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/ sudo wget -O /usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/x2UNIV.ppd http://www.servicedelivery.is.ed.ac.uk/xerox/x2UNIV.ppd sudo apt-get install smbclient (NB Use the appropriate package manager command for your Linux distro to install smbclient. Advice on this is outside the scope of these instructions)
Restart CUPS sudo systemctl stop cups sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl restart cups
Add and configure the print queue
Add print queue
lpadmin -p ExamplePrintQueue -v "smb://exampleprintservername/ExamplePrintQueue" -L "ExamplePrintQueue" -D "ExamplePrintQueue on exampleprintservername" -P "/usr/share/ppd/custom/Xerox/x2UNIV.ppd"
Configure print queue
lpadmin -p ExamplePrintQueue -o printer-is-shared=false -o auth-info-required=username,password -o duplex=DuplexNoTumble -o PageSize=A4 -o JCLBanner=False -o Option4=None -o Option8=False
Enable print queue
lpadmin -p ExamplePrintQueue -E
Authenticate to print
Submit a print job from an application, select ExamplePrintQueue as the destination printer When prompted to authenticate, enter your University Username in the form: ED\yourUUN with your Active Directory password and click OK.
MobilityPrint - EdPrintPull (follow-me) printing
Quickly add a print queue to allow printing of any document type (does not support tray selection).
- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Visit https://edin.ac/mobilityprint-ios (open this on Safari)
- Click Download and then Allow and Close
- Open your Settings app and go to the 'Profile Downloaded' option which should be near the top
- The profile will be called Papercut Mobility Print for iOS. Press the Install button, enter your device's passcode and press Install again and Done
When printing from an iOS app, you should now find the print queue EdPrintPull is available.
MobilityPrint - EdPrintPull (follow-me) printing
Quickly add a print queue to allow printing of any document type (does not support tray selection).
- Connect to the University network by ethernet, eduroam WiFi network or the Virtual Private Network (VPN) service
- Using the Chrome browser, visit https://edin.ac/mobilityprint-android
- Click Install or update which will launch the Google Play store
- Click Install on the Google Play Mobility Print page
Once installation is complete
- go back to the ‘Set up printing on your Android device’ webpage and tap Install or update again
- Select open with Mobility Print
- Enable Mobility Print by tapping on Android Settings
- Tap Mobility Print and toggle the setting to On
- Make sure that notifications are Enabled for Mobility Print
When printing from an app, you should now find the print queue EdPrintPull is available. The first time you print, a login screen will appear, login using your university username and password (the password you use to login to university computers).
EdPrint does not support the use of Chrome Books at this time
