Visit School of Informatics for Edinburgh Doors Open Day this weekend
The School of Informatics opens its doors to visitors this weekend.
The School of Informatics opens its doors to visitors this weekend. You can visit both the Appleton Tower (level 9) and the Informatics Forum (Garden Roof Terrace) over the weekend of 29th-30th September.

Appleton Tower
You can experience one of the best views of the city from level 9 of the Appleton Tower. It’s a fit-for-purpose social and study space commissioned at the last round of Appleton Tower refurbishments. It has recently been handed over to Informatics final year students for their sole use.
A controversial building since its inception, Appleton Tower recently underwent a thorough refurbishment with a new entrance and enhanced facilities and services and earned the ‘Design Through Innovation’ award in the 2018 RICS Awards.
Home to the School of Informatics since the Cowgate fire in 2002, it’s currently used for teaching while research has moved to the Informatics Forum across the road.
A LEGO® model of the building will be on display.
30-minute tours will take place hourly at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm and must be booked in advance. Assembly point for the tours will be at the East Entrance, please look out for our student ambassadors. Please note you won't be able to access other levels of the building.
Informatics Forum
Did you know the Informatics Forum has a garden roof terrace with a wonderful view of the surrounding area, including Arthur’s Seat?
Opened in September 2008 by the then First Minister, Alex Salmond, the Informatics Forum is a fit for purpose building, providing a Forum for Interaction that fosters synergies among the 500 researchers in Informatics. 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Informatics Forum.
You will be able to visit the ground floor of the breath-taking Forum between 10.30 and 2.30.
A LEGO® model of the Appleton Tower will be on display in the Forum and two students’ projects: Formula Student race car and Hyperloop pod will be displayed in the courtyard between the Forum and the Bayes Centre. Please note you won't be able to access other levels of the building or any of the adjoining buildings.

Tours to see the garden roof terrace will take place every half an hour – an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed by photographers! Tours must be booked in advance.
