New student society: SIGINT
Informatics undergraduates have set up a group for students interested in cyber security.
Like our more established student societies, SIGINT organises socials and tech talks but its main aim is to organise more ‘capture the flag’ (CTF) events.
SIGINT President Harvey Stocks explains:
“A CTF is a competition based around solving cyber security challenges, through hacking and great ingenuity, in a bid to gain points, where the team with the most points is crowned the winner.
“A New Year CTF will take place in Forrest Hill, Room 3.D02, Sunday 15 January 2017. There will be prizes up for grabs for the top three teams.”
Highlights so far
Since it was founded in September, the society has run two talks and hosted a successful ‘Capture The Sp00k’ CTF in Forrest Hill, competing alongside students from Napier.
As well as Harvey, SIGINT’s committee members are Oliver Piggott (Vice President), Joshua Green (Secretary) and Nicholas Lynch (Hacking Officer).
Some of SIGINT’s leading lights were on the teams which won the Scottish University Cyber Challenge and came second in the Deloitte CTF in recent months. They also helped to welcome 650 school pupils to the University for the Cyber Security Christmas lectures, 15 December 2016, at which lecturer Kami Vaniea, from our Security and Privacy Research Group, gave the keynote talks.
