Girls in Tech
Informatics students share their passion for computing in films launched to celebrate International Women’s Day, 8 March 2017.

A three-minute preview, Girls in Tech, is published online today, 7 March 2017, with a series of individual case studies following tomorrow and in the coming weeks.
The preview features extracts from interviews with Leimin Tian, Nazgul Tazhigaliyeva, Vaida Plankyte, Dimple Gulrajani, Constance Crowe and Joana Ribeiro, all speaking in English.
The case studies will feature these students and others from the UK and overseas, giving their individual accounts of how and why they became interested in computer science. Their stories have been filmed in English and in their own native language. All of the films have English subtitles.
Interviews with female staff will also be published in due course.
Supporting STEM subjects
The project has been organised by the School of Informatics as part of its Athena SWAN Silver Award programme. Athena SWAN supports the careers of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Professor Johanna Moore, Head of the School of Informatics, says:
Women were among the early pioneers of computing but in 2013/14 only 17% of computer science graduates across the UK were female. Over 21% of our School of Informatics undergraduates are women so we’re better than average but we are still very keen to encourage more.
“We hope these films will inspire more young women across the globe to take up computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and software engineering, to fill the growing skills gap in these areas.”
The Girls in Tech project is organised by the School’s Equality and Diversity Committee, led by Dr Kami Vaniea, who would like to thank everyone who took part or contributed in other ways. The films were made for the School by Raquel Sofer, Akasha Associates.
