Student Wins Prize for Butterfly Identification App

Mariyana Koleva, a final year Computer Science student, has won the 1st prize in the University College London Centre for Research on Evolution, Search and Testing (CREST) competition for her projects which identifies Butterflies.


The competition is aimed at current computer science undergraduate students across the UK and offers prize money to those projects judged the best. Several other Edinburgh students made it to the shortlist: Barnaby Jackson, Jibran Khan, Stephen McGruer, Karol Pogonowski and Razvan Ranca.

Mariyana Koleva's project is an app which takes a picture of a butterfly, uploads it to a server, identifies it, and downloads to the app information about the species.
