Student Wins Google Anita Borg Scholarship

Second year undergraduate student Alexandra Kearney has been awarded an Anita Borg Scholarship.

Alex, who studies Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science received this prestigious scholarships for female students after competing in a worldwide competition.

The Anita Borg Scholarship has been offered by Google each year since 2004 in honour of Dr. Anita Borg.

Dr Anita Borg proposed the "50/50 by 2020" initiative, so that women earning computing degrees would be 50% of the graduates by year 2020.

Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) award for the 2014-2015 academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students are chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships are awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background, passion for increasing the involvement of women in computer science, and demonstrated leadership. All scholarship recipients are also invited to attend an annual Google networking retreat in 2014.

Alex is one of just five students who recieved the scholarship across the UK.
