Two PhD Students win CIR Public Engagement Award 2021
August 2021 – Susanna Riley and Jennifer Shelley are the joint winners of the Centre’s 2021 Trainee Award for Excellence in Public Engagement, for their contributions to a variety of Centre initiatives.
PhD student, Jennifer Shelley, is recognised for her public engagement work over the course of her PhD, from school liaison events to science festivals. This includes the excellence of her regular contributions for CIR to the College-wide Science Insights high school engagement programme, and her contribution to the “Walking through the COVID-19 vaccine” interactive, self-guided walking tour in central Edinburgh for the 2021 Edinburgh Science Festival.
PhD student, Susanna Riley, is recognised for setting up and contributing to a local STEM Club at Niddrie Mill Primary School using the British Science Association's CREST Awards. This initiative has developed into a long-term community project with significant impact. Susanna also contributed to Dundee Science Centre's Home Learning Programme with an activity about DNA and genetics, providing accessible resources for enriching children’s lockdown teaching experience.
Through their involvement with the Centre’s Public Engagement committees, Susanna and Jennifer have both clearly demonstrated their public engagement skills and delivered engagement activities with dedication and enthusiasm. Congratulations to both for their well-deserved award!
