Highlights

  • Medicine at the University of Edinburgh yet again achieved excellent results and retained its position as a UK top five Medical School, as defined by research power
  • In a very dense data set, we are delighted that Edinburgh is in the top 5 UK medical schools in every recognised approach to ranking
  • 88% of the submission was judged to be world leading (4* 44%) or internationally excellent (3* 44%)
  • 75% of our impact case studies were judged to be of world leading standard (4*)
  • Crucially, Edinburgh was one of only a very small number of universities to increase both its 3* and 4* rated research whilst significantly increasing the number of researchers returned, by 23%, demonstrating the research power and advancement of the Medical School
  • Medicine at Edinburgh was again rated top in Scotland
  • Our submission to Unit of Assessment 1, Clinical Medicine, comprised over 200 research staff, predominantly from the Queen’s Medical Research Institute and the Institute for Genetics and Molecular Medicine
  • The University of Edinburgh’s position as one of Britain’s leading research universities - and Scotland’s top-ranked research institution - has been reaffirmed by the REF2014 results
  • The University rose to 4th in UK rankings
  • Its total submission was one of the largest and most comprehensive in the UK. A total of 1,852 individuals - more than 80 per cent of the institution’s academic staff - had their research assessed across 31 subject areas
