Phoebe wins second place for her Three Minute Thesis
November 2018: Phoebe Kirkwood from CIR has been awarded second prize in the prestigious international Universitas 21 3 Minute Thesis competition.
We are delighted to report that Phoebe Kirkwood from CIR has been awarded second prize in the People's Vote for the prestigious international Universitas 21 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition!
This was against exceptionally strong competition and we are all absolutely thrilled for her.
"This year I took part in the 3MT competition where you have 3 minutes to describe the ideas and importance of your PhD research in an engaging manner to a lay audience. I was awarded the runner up position while Owen James came first in the CMVM heat and I then went on to win the UoE level competition. I was unable to attend the UK national final as I was at a conference; however, Owen was submitted and he won – very well done Owen!
I was then submitted into the international Universitas 21 3MT competition where I was awarded the runner up position. I was absolutely stunned but thrilled as every competitor was outstanding, so it is a real honour to have been chosen from amongst them. I cannot thank the judges enough for awarding me this place.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of taking part in the 3MT competition, from setting out to describe my PhD research in a succinct and engaging manner right up to filming my presentation to take part in the Universitas21 competition.
I have learnt and honed so many essential skills including public speaking, confident delivery and thinking outside of the box and the experience has no doubt prepared me for many additional challenges I will come across throughout my academic career. I would highly recommend taking part in the 3MT competition to other PhD students as it is a challenge and a unique way to communicate your research. It was so interesting to sit down and really think about the bigger picture and how my PhD research fits in to it all and it has been so wonderful to hear the positive feedback from everyone who has listened.
It is an opportunity to reflect, think and communicate and has given me a whole new skillset to take forward. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in the competition and supported me throughout."
Phoebe is on the Tissue Repair PhD programme, and previously won the University of Edinburgh heat of the 3MT competition. You can watch her full presenation by following the link below.
