The Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) recently welcomed this year’s Fellows of the Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship (XDF) Programme. Following an intensive induction period, that introduced them to the IGMM and the School of Informatics, they are now about to embark upon their first rotation projects.

The Programme - designed for postdoctoral-level quantitatively trained scientists aspiring for an independent career in data-driven computational biomedicine - offers a personalised training and research opportunities aiming to support a small annual cohort in becoming leaders in cross-disciplinary science. In addition to enabling the Fellows to conduct cutting-edge biomedical research, the Programme puts particular emphasis on providing them with skills in scientific writing, securing research funding and budget management, which are essential in today’s highly competitive scientific environment.

New Fellows Vanessa Smer Barreto, whose background is cosmology, Lyndsay Kerr and Eric Latorre Crespo, who both have backgrounds in mathematics, embarked upon their 4-year XDF Programme journey this summer to enhance their analytical and computational expertise and to gain a comprehensive understanding of biomedical and health research.

The Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship (XDF) Programme is jointly funded by the Medical Research Centre and the University of Edinburgh (with some support from additional sources).

Application to the 2020 XDF Programme is open until 20 September 2019. For further information and details on how to apply visit the XDF website.
