Success Stories from the Programmes

Find out more about how the programmes were developed and the impact they are making across the University.

In spring 2020 the University of Edinburgh launched a new concept for leadership & management development which continued to offer a structured programme with built in agility to adapt to the changing needs of the organisation.

We are delighted that all three programmes have concluded with the largest ever intake.

Delegate reflections

Hear from delegates of the programmes in these 2 minute videos:

Edinburgh Manager Delegate Reflections

Edinburgh Leader Delegate Reflections

We will be highlighting some of the leadership and management reflections delegates shared as part of the programmes soon so do keep an eye out for these here.

Key benefits of the new approach

  • All eligible delegates accepted with increased capacity at all levels (Aspiring Manager +780%, Edinburgh Manager +740%, Edinburgh Leader +230%)

  • Due to our change in focus, delivery model and increased capacity the cost per head has been reduced by an average of 74% - a saving of over £45,000 per cohort

  • We have upskilled programme alumni to facilitate action learning sets. To date 35 alumni have facilitated 139 discussion groups saving over £27, 500 on previous costs

  • Utilises existing resources maximises return on investment and scalability (Active users of our Online Development Toolkit increased by 30% with almost double the number of new users, total time spent in resources increased by 30% with over double the number of resources accessed)

  • Focuses on developing a strong rooted leadership and management learning community that continues beyond the programme lifespan and embeds the culture change required to achieve the University strategic vision (over 200 managers and 200 leaders currently engaged in our online communities)

  • Gives a collective voice to management and leadership populations providing a clear dialogue channel between them and University Executive

  • Strengthens the position and accountability of the nominating manager role during the programme and afterwards; aligning with career development plans for nominated staff

  • Simplified user focussed nominations process reduced admin time by 80+ hours per intake

  • Evaluations demonstrate delegates across all programmes are confident in changing their behaviour, are discussing their development beyond the programme and are changing their perception of leadership and management to a more authentic approach.
