Richard Sowerby wins book prize

The School is delighted to hear that Richard Sowerby, Lecturer in Early Medieval Insular History, has been jointly awarded the Best First Book Prize by the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists for his book Angels in Early Medieval England (published by Oxford University Press, 2016). The prize is shared with Mercedes Salvador-Bello (University of Seville).

‘One of the things which first attracted me to the study of Anglo-Saxon England was the multidisciplinary nature of much of the scholarship,’ said Richard. ‘The International Society of Anglo-Saxonists has always made a point of recognizing that multidisciplinarity, and I’m honoured to see the book listed among so much other great work from across the humanities.’

The prize, awarded biennially, is for the best first monograph published during the preceding two years and was announced recently at the Society’s conference in Hawaii. Dr Sowerby’s book had previously been shortlisted for the Royal Historical Society Whitfield Prize.
