The School is delighted to announce that Professor Alvin Jackson - Sir Richard Lodge Professor of History – has recently been appointed to serve on the Irish Manuscripts Commission by the Irish Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Ms Heather Humphreys.  This is the first appointment to the Commission from outside the island of Ireland.

Professor Jackson commented: 'I believe that an appointment of this kind recognises the importance of the Irish history community outside of Ireland, and in particular our collective work at the University of Edinburgh.'

Appointments to the Irish Manuscripts Commission are made by the Irish Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht after an open competition and assessment by the Public Appointments Service.  The Commission was founded in 1928 in order to advise Irish governments on policy towards the preservation and accessibility of the island's documentary heritage.  It also has the task of raising public awareness of the primary sources materials for Irish history, especially through an active and prestigious programme of publication.
