AHRC Fellowship for Emile Chabal
Dr Emile Chabal has been awarded a major AHRC Leadership Fellowship grant to pursue his work on Eric Hobsbawm and the history of twentieth-century Marxism. (Published 4 August, 2017)
The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce that Dr Emile Chabal, Chancellor's Fellow in History, has been awarded a two-year AHRC Leadership Fellowship of £176,441 for his project entitled 'An intellectual biography of Eric Hobsbawm'. These prestigious fellowships provide time for 'research leaders, or potential future research leaders, to undertake focused individual research alongside collaborative activities which have the potential to generate a transformative impact on their subject area and beyond.'
Dr Chabal's project will focus on Eric Hobsbawm, one of the most prolific and influential English-language historians of the past century. One of the key aims of the project will be to produce the first full-length intellectual biography of Hobsbawm, but there will also be the opportunity to consider in more depth his role within the twentieth-century global left. In addition, extensive fieldwork in Latin America, the United States, India and the UK will provide ethnographic and oral history material that will be used to assess Hobsbawm's impact on diverse communities of students, scholars and activists. Finally, a core part of the project will be a new bibliographical website, which will include a database of Hobsbawm's published works in an accessible format.

I am sure I will produce much more exciting and innovative research as a result of this award".
