Teaching excellence awarded

Winners of the 2014 EUSA Teaching Awards have been announced; members of staff in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology have been recognised for their positive contribution to student learning.

The School did very well in this year's EUSA Teaching Awards, with three colleagues winning their categories at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, 23 April.

Great achievement

It is a great honour to receive this award from the one group who really matter, and it is testimony to the great work done by all those on the online MSc team.

Both short-listed nominees for the Best Personal Tutor award were members of the School; Dr Ulf Schoop, Lecturer in Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology, is congratulated on his success. The runner-up, Dr David Kaufman Lecturer in History (Online Distance Learning), went on to win the Teaching with Technology award.

Dr Kaufman was the only individual named in two categories, an achievement in itself. The latter award is a testimony to his work, but also to the team involved in the MSc in History Distance Learning programme, as Dr Kaufman generously acknowledged in his speech.

Early Career Fellow in Archaeology, Dr Rob Dinnis, is also to be congratulated as winner of the Ian Campbell award, which recognises teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The School itself was runner-up (to Chemistry) as the Best School overall, a great achievement.

Especial thanks are due, of course, to our students who wrote such complimentary things about us and our teaching to EUSA.

Contribution to student learning

The student-led awards recognise the teachers, support staff and students who have made a positive impact on students’ learning experience.

This year, more than 2,500 nominations were received, and a student judging panel determined the shortlist and winners.
