Aaron Allen wins prestigious prize

The School would like to congratulate Aaron Allen (an honorary postdoctoral fellow with us) who has won the prestigious David Berry Prize for 2011 for his article 'Conquering the Suburbs: Politics and Work in Early Modern Edinburgh', 'Journal of Urban History'.

The judges commented on the paper: ".... The article traces the difficulties faced by the Edinburgh authorities in asserting control, by way of obtaining feudal superiority, over nearby burghs or barony and regality. The suburbanization of neighbouring towns was a means of absorbing potential economic rivals. The article is characterised by a patient attention to detail, a rich blend of analysis and illustration, and an outward-looking comparative approach, which is the hallmark of the new generation of Scottish historians."
