Dr Jacob Blanc’s PhD dissertation, ‘The price of peace: Itaipu and the meanings of land and opposition in Brazil, 1957-1984’ was recently named Humanities Award Winner in the Brazilian Section by the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).

The Association encompasses all academic disciplines and, as it covers all of Latin America and the Caribbean, claims to be the largest academic organisation in the world, in terms of membership numbers. Within LASA 'sections' - devoted mostly to a specific country – there are several prizes for best book, best article and, in this case, best dissertation.

Dr Blanc said, ‘I'm really happy to have won the Brazil section dissertation prize. Knowing how many great scholars work on Brazil, it's a real honour to have my thesis chosen.’

Dr Blanc will receive his award at the LASA congress in May, held in Barcelona.
