Chancellor's Fellows in History and Classics
The University of Edinburgh intends to appoint up to 100 Chancellor’s Fellows across the University’s 22 schools as an investment in the future of teaching and research.
These prestigious awards are aimed primarily at early-career individuals of exceptional potential who have begun to establish a reputation for the highest quality research at the forefront of their discipline and who have a commitment to learning and teaching at university level.
Appointments are made for five years, subject to a satisfactory review after three years. Subject to this review, it is expected that candidates will move to a standard University open-ended contract after five years.
Appointments within the School
The School of History, Classics and Archaeology wishes to make two or, exceptionally, more appointments through the Chancellor’s Fellowship scheme. In common with other units in the University of Edinburgh, the School is keen to strengthen its research profile, and to recruit new colleagues with publications likely to be rated 3 star or 4 star in the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework.
The School sees its fundamental priority with the new Fellowship scheme as being to recruit additional research talent. However, although research excellence is the main criterion for appointment, we will also consider teaching ability and balance across the two relevant Subject Areas, History and Classics, and across the School as a whole.
Applications
In common with the wider scheme, the appointments will be made at University grades 7 or 8, or, exceptionally, grade 9, depending upon the candidate’s research experience.
Prospective candidates should first consult the Further Particulars published on the main University website.
In the History Subject Area we welcome outstanding applicants with research interests in any area of medieval or modern history. We are prepared to make an appointment in any area of medieval or modern history, but have identified particular strategic needs in Chinese history, history and e-learning, and history and medicine.
In the Classics area we welcome outstanding applicants with research interests in any of the disciplines of Classics (the classical languages and literatures, classical philosophy, ancient history and classical archaeology).
