Symposium in memory of Nicholas Phillipson

Following the sad news of the death of Nicholas Phillipson on 24 January, the School of History, Classics and Archaeology will host a two-day symposium in his memory.

'Sociability and the science of man in the Scottish Enlightenment: Themes from the work of Nicholas Phillipson (1937-2018)' will take place 1-2 March, 2019 in Old College, South Bridge. The first day will be devoted to academic papers on aspects of the European Enlightenments in the eighteenth century, and the second will involve personal reflections from Nicholas Phillipson’s friends and colleagues on working with him. 

'Nicholas Phillipson taught at Edinburgh for nearly 40 years,' said Professor Thomas Ahnert, ' And during the course of his career published seminal work on the nature and origins of the Scottish Enlightenment, including a ground-breaking book on Hume (1989, reissued in 2011) and a very widely praised intellectual biography of Adam Smith (2010). This symposium brings together historians of philosophy and historians of political thought, both to celebrate Phillipson's scholarly achievement, and to take further some of the ideas and insights to be found in his seminal work on the Scottish Enlightenment.'
