Dr Petros Bouras-Vallianatos has been awarded a very prestigious Wellcome University Award in the Humanities and Social Science . A specialist in Byzantine medical history - his project is entitled ‘Making and Consuming Drugs in the Italian and Byzantine Worlds, 12th-15th centuries’ - Dr Bouras-Vallianatos is currently based in History at King’s College London but will join the School of History, Classics and Archaeology later this month.

The Wellcome University Award provides a period of protected research time for outstanding scholars before taking up a lectureship post.  He will be based in History as the Wellcome Lecturer in the History of Medicine and will develop connections with our strong group of Byzantinists across the School.

Professor Ewen Cameron, Head of School, said: ‘I am really delighted to welcome Petros to the School. The Wellcome scheme is one of the most competitive across the humanities and social sciences, and Dr Bouras-Vallianatos’ success in winning this award is a very significant achievement.’
