Focus on India and sustainability for HCA student

Fourth year History (MA Hons) student Jamie Gemmell talks about 'Focus India', hosting an event as part of South Asia Week.

HCA FOcus India

During a sustainable fashion trip to India in Creative Learning week in 2019 fourth year History student Jamie Gemmell and fellow students were inspired to found 'Focus India' an interdisciplinary, student-led organisation concentrating on aspects of fast fashion supply-chains.

'We saw the effects that the fashion industry has on local communities and were inspired to try to bring about change' said Jamie. 'We want to encourage students and organisations from all social and academic backgrounds to participate in order to promote discussion, sharing ideas from their different perspectives.'

As part of South Asia Week at the University of Edinburgh there will be a launch event for Focus India, giving people the opportunity to meet organisations who put sustainability at the heart of their work and to engage with works inspired by Gujarati textiles and the issues surrounding sustainable fashion. Speakers include Winston Kwon (Chancellor’s Fellow in Strategy), Amrita Sadarangani (Regional Director of Edinburgh Global’s South Asia Team), and Jelena Sofronijevic (Fourth Year Politics Undergraduate and Creator of the INDIASCUSSION podcast).

The event - on Thursday 3 October, will take place from 4.45pm to 8.00pm in the University of Edinburgh Business School, Buccleuch Place - is free but ticketed, and open to all.
