Irish Taoiseach launches new Alvin Jackson book
The Irish Taoiseach, Mr Leo Varadkar, introduced Professor Alvin Jackson at his Royal Irish Academy discourse and at the launch of his new book ‘Judging Redmond and Carson’. (Published 12 March, 2018)
On Tuesday 6 March 2018, to mark the centenary of the death of John Redmond, the leader of Irish nationalism (1900-18), the Royal Irish Academy invited Jackson to delivered a discourse on ‘Redmond and Carson: bloodshed, borders and beyond’ and to launch his new book - 'Judging Redmond and Carson’.
The Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, introduced the event in a packed Royal Irish Academy lecture hall and described Jackson as 'one of the finest historians writing about Irish and British history, and ['Judging Redmond and Carson'] adds to his already considerable reputation ... it represents a more nuanced and mature approach to the conflicts that shaped the Irish state and the state of Northern Ireland as each approach their centenary’. The Taoiseach also argued that 'if we can approach the past with toleration, respect and understanding, then perhaps we can approach our challenges of the present in the same way as well'.
Professor Jackson has been Richard Lodge Professor of History at the University of Edinburgh since 2005 and has served as Head of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Edinburgh and as Dean of Research and Depute Head of the College of Humanities and Social Science. He at present holds a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship to develop his comparative work on union states.
