Ice cream history?

Come to our free lecture, re-thinking the Italian presence in Scotland.

Italians in Scotland during World War II - popular ice-cream sellers or victims of racism and hostility?

  • Speaker: Dr Wendy Ugolini
  • Date/time: Wednesday 28 August 2013, 2-3pm
  • Venue: Meadows Lecture Theatre, School of History, Classics and Archaeology, Doorway 4, Old Medical School, Teviot Place, Edinburgh EH8 9AG.

Synopsis

This lecture looks beyond the romanticised and nostalgic images of Italians in Scotland as popular ice-cream sellers, to address incidences of racism and hostility endured by the Italian population since their earliest days of settlement and, in particular, during the Second World War.

Re-thinking the past

Through an analysis of personal testimonies, this lecture will also examine the question of who remembers on behalf of the Italian Scots and for what purpose.
