Fairly-traded textiles in late 19th century Ireland and Scotland

Professor Janice Helland, author of Craft, Community and the Material Culture of Place and Politics, 19th-20th Century will discuss the shift towards home-industry production of hand-crafted textiles in Ireland and Scotland in the 1880s. She will interrogate the concept of ‘fairly traded’ by comparing late nineteenth-century ‘beneficent’ practices with late twentieth-century alternative trade cooperatives.

This lecture is free and open to the public. It is funded by the Leverhulme Trust as part of the Artisans and the Craft Economy in Scotland project conference.
