Spanish History Conference: Identity, State and Society in Modern Spain

After two successful years of online talks, the Modern Spanish History Doctoral Seminars team is organizing a conference in Canterbury with the aim of continuing to foster connections and exchanges between doctoral researchers of modern Spain across the world. The conference will also include several online papers. The event, which counts on the support of both the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and the School of History at the University of Kent, will examine the interactions between identity, state and society in Spain since 1800. By considering the construction, contestation and interrelation of various identities throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century, it aims to offer a comprehensive vision of the Spanish state’s modern history. As such, we welcome proposals for twenty-minute papers from doctoral students or early career researchers based in any discipline so long as they address the key theme of ‘identity’, including – but not limited to – those of nationality, social class, political affiliation and gender. These can be delivered in English or Spanish.

Después de dos años muy exitosos de seminarios realizados en línea, el Seminario Doctoral de Historia Contemporánea Española organiza una conferencia en Canterbury, Inglaterra, con el objetivo de continuar fomentando intercambios intelectuales entre investigadores de doctorado por todo el mundo. La conferencia también incluirá varias ponencias online. El congreso, que cuenta con el apoyo de las universidades de Edimburgo y Kent, indagará en las interacciones entre la identidad, la sociedad y el estado en España a partir del año 1800. Mediante una consideración de la construcción, negociación y interrelación de diversas identidades a lo largo de los siglos XIX and XX, pretende ofrecer una visión amplia de la historia contemporánea del estado español. Como tal, acogeremos propuestas basadas en cualquier disciplina siempre que aborden el tema clave de la "identidad", incluidos, entre otros, los de nacionalidad, clase social, afiliación política y género. Las intervenciones se pueden realizar en castellano o inglés. Además de estudiantes de doctorado, animamos a investigadores en la fase inicial de su carrera a participar.
