Screening the Troubles - A City Solitary (1963) and Derry (1969)

To mark 5 October 1968, when civil rights protesters clashed with police in the city of Derry, a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’ the Irish History Research group is hosting a joint event with the Filmhouse Cinema. Fifty years on, this is a a rare opportunity to view two films made by John Hume, a trained historian and one of Ireland’s most influential politicians, in which he explored the complex history and politics of his native city. Introduced by Dr. Thomas Dolan of the University of Edinburgh, A City Solitary (1963) and John Hume’s Derry (1969) should intrigue people familiar with Northern Ireland’s turbulent past, but also those keen to learn more about the region amidst current political developments.
