School Year Group Meetings

Information about the School Year Group Meetings.

Year 1 students

Week 1 of semester 1 - Wednesday 18th September 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This session is aimed at getting first-year students started, introducing them to how the pastoral care system works, and encouraging them to think about how best to use their time here.  

 

Week 4 of semester 1 - Wednesday 9th October 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This meeting will provide information on studying abroad and on the University Careers Service; there will also be an opportunity to ask questions of the Liaison Librarian for HCA.  

 

Semester 2 

Week 6 of semester 2 - Wednesday 26th February 2020, Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

In this session the Senior Tutor will give information about progression into year 2, on applying for courses and study abroad opportunities. There will also be a question and answer session with the Senior Tutor and Head of School.

 

Year 2 students

Week 5 of semester 1 - Wednesday 16th October 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This session will focus on entry to Honours as well as the year abroad. There will also be information on career planning.

 

Week 6 of semester 1 - Wednesday 23rd October 2019, Room G.13, William Robertson Wing, 1.00 - 2.00 pm

Year Abroad info session  Are you interested in spending a year abroad? You have the opportunity to spend your third year in dozens of universities across the world, from Europe to North America, Asia and Australia. And for the first time, anyone thinking about an European destination has the option to study for a single semester. This information session will be held by returning 2018/19 year abroad students and the School’s international officers. Online applications open on 4 November!

 

Year 3 students

Week 6 of semester 1 - Wednesday 23rd October 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This session aims to develop students’ forward planning by providing advice on getting work experience and will also provide information on how degrees are classified.

 

Year 4 students

Welcome Week - Friday 13th September 2019, Teviot Lecture Theatre, 2.00 - 3.00 pm

Welcome Back! This session is aimed at finalists, helping them prepare for their last year at University, offering tips and guidance on how to make the most of their degree, remind them of the support available and to offer a chance to ask questions.  

 

Week 7 of semester 1 - Wednesday 30th October 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This session will focus on getting the most out of your final year and on finding a job after graduation.

Years 3 and 4 students

Stepping up to Honours 

Week 1 of semester 1 - Wednesday 18th September 2019, Sydney Smith Lecture Theatre, 3.00 - 4.30 pm

Undergraduate students often describe the move to Honours’ level work as a ‘step up’ from first and second year. This workshop, for all HCA Honours students, will provide you with practical strategies on how to successfully manage this ‘step up’ and optimise your performance in, and experience of, Honours.

Specifically, this workshop will include: 

  • Honours expectations and how to meet them
  • Honours scholarship skills review
  • Critical thinking in assignments
  • Active reading for better essay writing
  • High quality learning strategies for efficient and effective use of your study time
  • Overcoming procrastination and managing your time effectively

 

Joint Honours students

Week 2 of semester 1 - Wednesday 25th September 2019, Appleton Tower Lecture Theatre 5, 1.30 - 3.00 pm

This session is aimed at Joint Honours students, introducing them to HCA-specific aspects of their degree, including assessment and submission, support available for joint students and the role of the Student Support Office and how joint honours students can play a part in the life of the School.
