Alvin Jackson elected to the Academia Europaea

The School congratulates Professor Alvin Jackson, who has been elected as a member of the prestigious Academia Europaea.

Professor Jackson, Sir Richard Lodge Professor of History, was elected at a recent meeting of the Academia Europaea Council in Darmstadt, Germany.

Academic excellence

The key criterion for election to the Academia is ‘sustained academic excellence in the candidate’s field’: membership is, therefore, highly competitive and follows a rigorous peer review selection process.

Professor Jackson, the fifth historian working in Scotland ever to be honoured in this way, is recognised for his work on modern Irish and British political history and on comparative constitutional unions.

Earlier this year he was also elected as an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy.
