Director, Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies
I completed my undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the London School of Economics and stayed on to do postdoctoral research funded by the Leverhulme Trust. I have taught Economic and Social History at the University of Edinburgh since 1990 and was appointed Director of the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies in 2013. I have held fellowships at the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1994, a Leverhulme Fellowship in 1997-8, the Caird Senior Research Fellowship at the National Maritime Museum in 2007/8, and the InterAmericas Fellowship at the John Carter Brown Library, Brown University in 2010/11. In 2017-18, I am a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College Oxford.
