Applications are assessed individually against the entry criteria. Those from mature and non-traditional students with a degree to the required level in any relevant arts, humanities or social science field, relevant experience or a professional degree qualification may also be considered. The Admissions Committee need evidence that you will be able to undertake study History at graduate level. As such, it is essential that you have passed at least some courses in History (note, not a full degree) at honours (upper undergraduate) level.
Any requests for transfer of credit must be indicated at the application stage and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Credit can only be given against coursework that has not been used towards any previous qualification and must have been obtained in a History topic that can be aligned with content offered in the MSc History (online) programme. Requests should be sent to the Programme Administrator (lindsay.scott@ed.ac.uk) for consideration and should be accompanied by a full syllabus/course descriptor for any courses you wish to be reviewed. Late requests for transfer credit cannot be considered.
Who can act as my referee?
We prefer applicants to provide academic references in your application, ideally from someone involved in your undergraduate or postgraduate study, however we are aware that this is not always possible. If an applicant is unable to obtain an academic reference, we will accept a professional one, however your referee must be able to comment on your academic ability and potential suitability for postgraduate study.
References must have been written within the last year.
