School students win in Women's History Scotland Essay Prize 2020
In a year of a record numbers of entries, the School is particularly delighted to announce that three students have been named as winner and runners-up in the Women's History Scotland Essay Prize, 2020.
The winners of the Women's History Scotland Leah Leneman Essay Prize, now in its 20th year, have been announced. Amanda Gavin was named winner, and Mara Schmueckle and Rachel Meredith Davis as runners-up. All are either History PhD candidates or alumna of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.
Amanda won for her essay on the culture of care. Her thesis, entitled ‘Children’s Experiences of the Care System in Scotland Since 1948’, is co-supervised by Professor Louise Jackson and Professor Lynn Abrams (University of Glasgow), and she is currently a visiting research student at the School.
Runners-up Mara (currently PhD candidate researching ‘Marriage in late Medieval Scotland Applications to the Apostolic Penitentiary 1404-1560’) and Rachel (who graduated in 2020 after completing research ‘Elite women and power in Late Medieval Scotland, 1296 to 1458’) share supervisors in the form of Dr Cordelia Beattie and Professor Stephen Boardman
Amanda, Mara and Rachel will receive a cash prize will see their essays published in Scottish Journal of Historical Studies.
