Deadline approaches for outstanding PhD Scholarship
The application deadline is fast approaching for an outstanding PhD student scholarship, worth £15,000 per year.
The William R McFarlane Scholarship is open to full-time PhD History applicants whose research is relevant to the history of Scottish emigration and/or the impact of Scottish mobility on overseas countries, or related themes.
Proposals may focus on any period from the medieval centuries to recent times.
Application deadline: 30 June 2013*.
*Please note that you will not be able to access the online application form unless you have already applied for admission to the University of Edinburgh and have full authentication to use EASE, the University's login system.
Professor Tom Devine, Director of the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies, says:
“The award is possible thanks to the generous support of two alumni, the leading financier Alan McFarlane and his wife, Anne.
“The £1million they have kindly donated to the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies will support two PhD scholarships in perpetuity and provide 10 undergraduate access bursaries for students in financial need.
“Their gift is believed to be the largest private donation to a history-related project at a British University”.
Fees, stipend, research allowance
The winner of the William R McFarlane Scholarship will receive £15,000 per year for the duration of their PhD degree programme - usually three years - subject to satisfactory progress.
The funding will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fees, a stipend and research allowance of £450.
Informal enquiries about the award can be made to Professor Tom Devine.
